vim not opening anymore (taking ages several minutes...)

Hi,
I don't know what happened, I didn't change anything on my old debian8 server (uptime around 1600 days) but suddenly vim stopped working...
when I try to open a file or just launch it, nothing happens, it hangs... in general I loose patience and interrupt it with a Ctrl+C and then vim appears but if it was to open a file the file is not opened, I just have an empty vim.
while creating my account on the forum and writing this post, I've let running `vim ~/.bash_aliases` and discovered it finally opens the file but it takes more than 1 minute...
here is what I tried:
1.: restart the server as there was not much memory left... => nothing changed
2.: remove my `~/.vimrc` and `~/.viminfo` => nothing changed
3.: update to debian 9 using the archive repository => nothing changed
4.: uninstall vim and reinstall it (on debian 9) => nothing changed

I'm running out of ideas... I've always used vim. this is quite problematic for me...
the only thing I've changed recently before this problem appears is to update my firewall to include ipv6 rules. but this shouldn't have any impact... otherwise I didn't touch the server...
any ideas?
